If you're in the market for a new set of wheels, you may have read previous Boro posts about the automobiles you should buy. This isn't one of them. Scroll down to see out our list of ten impractical vehicles you should not buy (no matter how much you want to) and the reasons why.
1. FIAT 500
In life, there are some fashion trends that don't add value to your lifestyle. Case in point: the Fiat 500. From its minuscule size and rough driving experience to its cramped interior, this car comes across as a prop that's only taken out of storage when owners want to show off to their friends.
2. BMW ISETTA
Two words immediately come to mind when thinking about the Isetta: ugly and unnecessary. Granted it was built in a time when the world was rebuilding from the Second World War and BMW was trying their hand at producing new models, but it doesn't belong in this century and it gives people the impression you inherited your grandfather's car.
3. MAZDA MIATA
Having a Miata can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, there's enough room for you and your significant other to take a romantic moonlit drive. On the other hand, there's not enough room for your friends (sorry to all the bar hoppers and pub crawlers) or for your cargo (for those who have this car, just know moving into the dorms just got a lot more difficult).
4. BUICK ENCORE
Don't let the Encore deceive you. While it may look luxurious on the outside, its four-cylinder engine won't be the one that gets you excited to feel the wind in your hair or the rush of the highway as you drive towards wherever your destination may be.
5. ALFA ROMEO 4C
You'd be surprised at how many cars are built for speed and speed alone. This one is no exception, with a 1.7-liter, turbo four-cylinder engine that adds a sense of excitement to any driving experience. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer much in the luxury department, from the exhaust system that takes the quiet out of a quiet ride to the bare-bones interior that makes passengers feel as if they're trapped in a dark room.
6. BMW X6
This is one SUV you don't want to take into consideration when transporting precious cargo. Its one focus is on handling, not accessibility or luxury, despite the BMW branding plastered throughout the car.
7. SMART FORTWO
The smart car is many things. Easy to park, easy to maneuver, gas efficient, less expensive than other automobiles, etc. But it isn't the one for you. It fits no more than two passengers (apologies to those who wanted to hit the town with friends this weekend), has zero cargo space (to those who live off-campus this semester, have fun hauling groceries) and isn't equipped to handle long rides (blame it on the three-cylinder gas engine, driving range of 58 miles). Not to mention the potential safety hazards that come with a car so small and so fragile.
8. DODGE JOURNEY
You know the saying "wrong for all the right reasons"? The Journey is just that. It lacks the freedom that comes with any other car, with its large size and claustrophobic interior creating a feeling of confusion as you struggle to find a balance between the two.
9. CADILLAC ESCALADE
The Escalade may have plenty of space for your cargo and your friends, but that's about as far as the pros go. Its massive size makes it difficult when maneuvering through parking lots and all the gas prices you accumulate from driving cross-country or home for the weekend will put a strain on your wallet. And let's not forget the added strain that comes with the Escalade's steep pricing (starting base MSRP for a 2019 model is $75,195).
10. COMMUTER FORD F-650
One website described the Commuter Ford as "a truck on steroids". We couldn't agree more. And in all honesty, we think that's all there is to say about this vehicle. Well, that and the fact that it'll give your fellow students the wrong impression (they might become convinced you stole it from a demolition derby).
